In the footsteps of miners
The highest-lying mountain mine in Europe may be found on the Schneeberg mountain in Ridnaun featuring an impressive past. Merchants also settled here to dig for silver and lead. The mine had its heyday around 1500, yet its nearly 800-year-old history is still visible, as the mine has been converted into an adventure mine open to visitors.

Miners left their mark in other places. St. Magdalena miners' chapel, with its precious winged altar, was built by the Schneeberg miners in 1480. At the end of Ridnaun valley, visitors can see the former ore processing plant.

Actively experience nature and history
A Farm Holiday in Ratschings will not just let guests delve deep into the history of the place, but also into the midst of nature. Gilfenklamm gorge is the only gorge in the world to be cut deep in pure white marble. Water carved its way through the marble here over millions of years. Walkways and steps lead through the untamed and romantic ravine.
Roaring water runs through Burkhardklamm gorge in Ridnaun, too. Hikers can reach it via a panoramic path featuring views of the Stubai Alps on the way.
Water and nature are the subject of Schloss Wolfsthurn castle, where the South Tyrol Museum for Hunting and Fishing is housed. This Baroque building is considered one of the finest castles in Tyrol. Visitors will find the originally-furnished halls along with the hunting and fishing collection.

Holding onto rural roots
Ratschings is a stranger to a hectic pace of life. Mountain farming still plays a major role here. Lots of mountain meadows are mowed, some of them by hand. There are lots of small livestock breeders in narrow Ratschingstal valley. Goats or Tyrolean mountain sheep are important working animals here. Not just for food in the form of lamb or mutton, but sheep's wool is processed and used as natural fibre.

Whether when the cattle are driven back down from the mountains during 'Almabtrieb', at village fetes, or tasting culinary specialities such as 'Graukas' cheese – visitors will come across the traditions and customs of the place everywhere on holiday in a holiday flat or room in Ratschings.

Ratschings is a place where customs and legends abound. One of the best-known characters in Tyrol is Pfeifer Huisele, a notorious Alpine trickster.

This legendary figure was born in Ratschings, travelled through valleys and over mountains with his donkey and was even said to have made a pact with the devil. Ten information boards tell this story along Pfeifer-Huisele-Weg path, which leads to his birthplace.

This and other themed walks, such as 'Bergerlebniswelt' path on the pasturelands of Ratschings-Jaufen, lead through the countryside of Ratschings and tell of its history, inhabitants and traditions in the same breath.
