Farm holidays in Mühlbach
On a Farm Holiday in Mühlbach, the village comes to life: film backdrops are laid bare, traditions such as the 'Almabtrieb' cattle drive down from the mountains provide film-worthy shots.

The market community of Mühlbach with its three villages of Spinges, Meransen and Vals lies right at the entrance to the Pustertal valley. The Gitschberg mountain near Meransen and the Jochtal valley near Vals together form Gitschberg-Jochtal region and are both great places to ski and hike.

A Farm Holiday in Mühlbach: Tolls, please!
The Mühlbacher Klause pass rises above Mühlbach and Vintl. Once a fortress and customs post, it now has its own story to tell: here at the western start of the Pustertal valley, ran the border between the counties of Tirol and Görz. In the 13th century, the older Mühlbacher Klause was built to mark this, while the younger one followed in 1460. these two were to mark the border between the counties until 1500. It was not until Maximilian the 1st annexed Pustertal valley to the county of Tirol that the Mühlbacher Klause lost its original function and was henceforth used as a customs post. The former main road led through the inner courtyard of the fortress grounds. Travellers had to pay a customs duty here. The granite slab that served as a payment counter for tolls has been preserved until today. The old Mühlbacher Klause, on the other hand, is no more, but the new one may be visited on a guided tour. This is the regular setting for open-air events. Mühlbacher Klause association is responsible for the maintenance of the ruins.

Holidays in Mühlbach: a mountain pasture village as film set
A Farm Holiday in Mühlbach is not just interesting from a historical point of view. The municipality can boast some amazing landscape. The Fanealm in Valsertal is said to be the prettiest mountain pasture village in South Tyrol and has served as a film set on several occasions, with one episode of the 'Bergdoktor' TV series being filmed here. At an altitude of 1,739 metres, traditional wooden hay huts and dwellings, a church and three working mountain pasture huts may be seen. They are a popular destination for family days out and start for hikes to mountain peaks in the area, too. The 'Milchfest' milk festival on the Fanealm, taking place every two years, is a high point. South Tyrol's dairy farmers and their milk take centre stage. There are milking competitions and butter pounding, while visitors can find out how cheese is made and taste the farm products. You can get to know old traditions and the diverse nature of milk from South Tyrol on a holiday in Mühlbach. The Fanealm may be reached by taking the 'Milchsteig' route. This path features interesting information about milk and cows.

The cattle festival
Cows play the star role in Meransen at the 'Almabtrieb', one of the largest and most famous of its kind in South Tyrol. Between the end of September and the start of October, it gradually becomes time for the cows to return to the valley after their summer sojourn in the mountains and back to the warm cowsheds – cause for celebration. For the occasion, the animals are adorned in festive manner with wreathes and bells. The head cow goes at the front of a long line of cattle, sheep and goats, shepherds and dairy farmers, while it makes its way down to Meransen. Finally, a traditional farm festival featuring music and all kinds of Tyrolean treats, some of which are prepared only on that occasion, takes place. A good way to get to know the culinary side to Mühlbach better on a Farm Holiday.
