Farm Holidays in the Rosengarten-Latemar area

Farm Holidays in Rosengarten - Latemar
On a Farm Holiday in the Rosengarten-Latemar area, you’ll be having breakfast beneath the Dolomites and admiring emerald-green Karersee lake.

Countless sagas abound about the Rosengarten and Latemar mountains. It’s no wonder, as they provide a natural spectacle that could be mistaken for sorcery: mountains that turn rose-red at dusk, a lake featuring shimmering tones of all shades of green as if a pot of colour had been poured into it, and mountains that look like dolls lined up in a row. Not a bad choice of destination for a Farm Holiday, then – particularly because lots of villages in the Rosengarten-Latemar area are part of the ’Alpine Pearls‘ umbrella brand, which aims to attract gentle tourism and Soft Mobility.

Your Farm Holiday in the Rosengarten-Latemar area
Most villages in the Rosengarten-Latemar area lie in Eggental valley: Karneid, Welschnofen and Deutschnofen. As it wasn’t until 1861 that a road was built through the narrow valley, its inhabitants used to be self-sufficient. Nearly every farmer or artisan had to produce practically everything they needed themselves. Welschnofen, in particular, was affected by the elements: a rainy summer meant hunger in winter. Deutschofen, on the other hand, fared better. A road through Brantental valley meant that people from Deutschnofen could trade and they take advantage of this: their wood was famous and even the columns for the lions on St. Mark’s Square in Venice are made from wood from Deutschofen. Nowadays, the Dolomites road runs from Karneid to Deutschnofen, Welschnofen and the Karer Pass. Lots of people commute to nearby Bozen, but still live in the old farmhouses. Farmers today are no longer required to be self-sufficient and most of them have specialised in livestock farming. Whether cows, horses, donkeys, goats, sheep, pigs or rabbits, you’ll come into contact with lots of animals on a Farm Holiday in the Rosengarten-Latemar area.

The region of natural spectacles
Even if you enjoy watching cattle grazing on the meadows, you should definitely get out of your holiday flat in the Rosengarten-Latemar area. Karersee lake, an emerald-green lake reflecting the Latemar mountains, near Welschnofen, is a must-see. This lake is a protected natural monument and considered one of the prettiest lakes in the Alps. A trip to see it may be combined with a walk that does not have to be started at the lake: the Rosengarten-Latemar area is part of Schlern-Rosengarte Nature Park, which features an abundance of hiking paths and mountain peaks to choose from. A different kind of natural spectacle is the Bletterbachschlucht gorge near Aldein. The Bletterbach stream has carved a way through the gorge and revealed countless layers of rock from a variety of eras. Thanks to its special composition, it was named a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.

More than hiking
Yet, not every day has to consist of hiking. At the village of Gummer, there is an observatory and a planetarium. In the evening, it is possible to observe the stars in the company of expert astronomists or discover the secrets of the universe on a 3D screen. Besides this: if you’ve always wanted to ride up a mountain pass on a mountain bike, now’s your chance, as everyone can try this on a hired e-bike. In addition, there are lots of climbing routes on the rockfaces of the Rosengarten and Latemar mountains. If you prefer to keep your feet near to the ground, there’s the high rope course in Obereggen. Last, but not least, there are 90 kilometres of ski piste in two different ski resorts, as well as lots of sledge runs and cross-country runs to enjoy in winter. It’s hard to feel bored on a Farm Holiday in the Rosengarten-Latemar area.
