Every year, thoroughbred
Haflinger horses, also affectionately known to locals as ‘blondes’ thanks to their characteristic golden manes, participate in a race at the racecourse in Meran.
At
10.00 in the morning, there is a traditional procession of all the horses taking part and their riders dressed in festive local costume leading from the centre of Meran to the racecourse at Rennplatz. In the afternoon, the horses put on thrilling races featuring various disciplines and age groups over a distance of 1,600 m. Between the individual passageways musical interludes, dancing performances and whip crackers (‘Goaßlschneller’) will provide entertainment. At
17.45 the exciting final will take place and the fastest Haflinger in South Tyrol will be crowned.
Tip: Norbert Rier (singer in the folk music group the ‘Kastelruther Spatzen’) is a keen horse fan and Haflinger owner and regularly attends this event.
