A connoisseur's dream
From weeks focussing on specialities like asparagus and apples to traditional 'Törggelen' in autumn, a Farm Holiday in Nals provides the chance to enjoy a range of culinary treats made from local farm produce.
The 3,000-metre-high Texelgruppe mountains shelter the village from the cold north wind and allow apples and grapes to thrive in the flat valley basin. The combination of mild climate and sandy soil along the Etsch river provides prime conditions for the growing of a regal vegetable – asparagus. In spring, farmers deliver this tasty crop right from the field to the kitchens of inns and restaurants in the area, where they are made into a range of dishes by skillful cooks. While farm kitchens are busy preparing fragrant South Tyrolean apple strudel at the start of autumn after the apple harvest, the first chestnuts are about to ripen and fall from the trees on the slopes of the Mendel ridge on the western side of the village. They are roasted in a perforated pan over an open fire in late autumn and are served with the season's new wine, or 'Sußer', for a spot of  'Törggelen'. A Farm Holiday in Nals  means lots of delicious treats involving apples, chestnuts, asparagus and wine.

Along the South Tyrol Wine Road
Nals is situated at the northern end of the South Tyrol Wine Road, which runs southwards through vineyards and is great for an excursion. Insights into wine farming complement fortresses and castles, and wine tasting sessions and events take place along the Wine Road. There are guided tours and tastings offered in Nals Margreid wine cellar in the village – the perfect symbiosis between wine-growing and architecture.

The village lies right on the South Tyrol network of cycle paths with the Etsch valley cycle path, which follows the Etsch river for miles, and the Via Claudia Augusta cycling path, which gets its name from a major route in ancient Roman times.

The military and trade route built by the Roman Emperor Claudius, Via Claudia Augusta, used to run right past Nals across the Alps. Nowadays, the stretch, which goes from Vinschgau to the Unterland area in South Tyrol, is a popular cycle path. There are lots of historical spots along the way, including a Roman archaeological site in Nals. A springtime trip along the apple cycle path through blossoming orchards is a treat, too.
Nals' pleasant climate makes cycling and hiking possible from March until well into November. There are weekly guided tours in Nals and the area between Tisens and Eppan at this time, too.
The hiking paths run through orchards and vineyards, chestnut groves and decidous woodland, past meadows and up to mountain pastures, making a Farm Holiday in Nals a great experience. And after an eventful day in the countryside, a holiday flat or room in Nals provides the ideal place for the whole family to retreat to. You can enjoy the landscape in peace and quiet and relax – amidst apple trees, vineyards and views of the surrounding mountains.
