Customs, traditions, history, legends and myths, age-old handicraft and getting a taste of country life. As farms in South Tyrol have retained their small-scale character over the years, the Alps and the traditions of their rural inhabitants have lived side by side and changed very little over time. The younger generation in particular is making an effort to uphold traditions in South Tyrol once more.
The landscape of South Tyrol is remarkable in that it is clearly marked by isolated settlements. A farm often consists of a woodland clearing with a farmhouse, stable and the land surrounding it.
Fences have always been a part of the rural landscape, serving as a border between fields and farmland, hemming hedge paths and tracks and encircling mountain pastures.
Visitors to South Tyrol cannot fail to notice that local farmers tend to wear a blue apron on weekdays. Without this blue apron, which reaches down to the knees, they would feel only half-dressed.
The inhabitants of South Tyrol have their own particular charm, as do their festivals. At Carnival time visitors can see some pretty strange traditions and customs being played out.
