Ice holes

When the summer sun beats down, it’s time to cool off – and time for a family trip to the south of South Tyrol. Here, to the south of Bozen, in a hollow above St. Michael, Eppan, is where you will find just the refreshment you need.

There’s lots to discover amidst the porphyry rock – there are even icicles here in summer. In the woods between Eppan and Kaltern you can find the so-called ‘ice holes’, which pump cool air out of the rocks into the summery atmosphere. One interesting effect of this micro-climate is that plants such as rhododendrons and cranberries, usually only found at high altitudes, thrive on this small spot 500 metres above sea level.
There is a path to the ice holes, which is also suitable for children.
